The Anti-Mafia Militarization

Tourists arriving in Sicily often misinterpret the bustling, disorganized streets of Catania as a sign of lawlessness. This is a fatal assumption. Due to the historical presence of organized crime (Cosa Nostra), Catania is heavily militarized.

While Article 75 of Italian law applies here (making personal possession an administrative offense rather than a crime), the reality on the ground is aggressive. Police conduct frequent, unprovoked stop-and-search operations on pedestrians, utilizing anti-mafia protocols that afford them much wider latitude than in northern Italy.

Piazza Teatro Massimo & "I Falchi"

Piazza Teatro Massimo is the beating heart of Catania's nightlife, packed with students and expats. Naturally, it is the primary hunting ground for the police.

Beware of the Falchi (The Hawks). These are plainclothes motorcycle police units specific to southern Italy. They ride unmarked scooters, dress like regular civilians or rough locals, and weave through the crowds to intercept transactions instantly. Never engage in street buys around the Teatro or the adjacent narrow alleys.

Fontanarossa (CTA) K-9 Grid

Catania-Fontanarossa Airport is the busiest in southern Italy. Because it is a primary transit hub, it is locked down by the Guardia di Finanza (GdF).

Unlike many European airports that only check international arrivals, the GdF routinely deploys K-9 (sniffer dog) units at the baggage claims for domestic flights arriving from Rome or Milan, attempting to catch passengers bringing product down from the north. Transporting anything through CTA is extremely high-risk.

CBD Mirages & San Berillo

The Via Etnea CBD Trap

Shops openly selling "Cannabis" on the main avenues are strictly selling legal hemp (< 0.6% THC) under Italian Law 242/2016. It will not get you high. It is a tourist trap designed to look authentic.

The San Berillo Labyrinth

The decayed historic district of San Berillo might seem like an easy place to score. It is highly dangerous. It is heavily monitored by undercover units, and tourists entering this zone are prime targets for scams, low-quality product, or immediate arrest upon exiting.
